Groton CT
Founded in 1646 by Gov. Winthrop, the area was called Pequot Plantation until
1705. Shipbuilding, the earliest industry, was put to the test in the Revolution
when Groton ships harassed the British. Legend has it that Benedict Arnold led
his attack on Fort Griswold in revenge. Shipping and whaling were major sources
of revenue for the new states, and local factories built the Civil War ironclad
Galena and the first nuclear powered submarine, Nautilus.
Groton is home to major corporations such as the Electric Boat Division of
General Dynamics. This legendary corporation stunned the world with the
launching of the USS Nautilus, now a museum near the main gate of the Naval
Submarine Base. The World Research Headquarters of Pfizer, Inc., a research
facility dedicated to the development of medicines, is located next to Electric
Boat.
The Nautilus Submarine and Museum, located near the submarine base, is open
daily for visitors. Interested persons can also see the submarine base itself,
where many attack subs are berthed. Other recreational activities in town
include many public parks and forests.
