Norwich CT
Norwich, "The Rose of New England", was purchased from the Mohegan Chief Uncas
and incorporated in 1659. Native sons include Samuel Huntington, a signer of the
Declaration of Independence and Benedict Arnold, a traitor during the
Revolution.
Located at the tip of a river with access to the Sound, Norwich was a major
seaport during colonial times. Industry thrived due to river water, used for
power. Ponemah Mills, 1871, is currently listed on the National Register of
Historic Places.
The city boasts a 300 acre Industrial Park with municipal utility services where
33 corporations are located. Norwich includes the areas of Norwichtown,
Greenville, Occum, Yantic and Taftville. In 1987, the marina and public
waterfront park were completed, encompassing both shores of the Thames River and
featuring restaurants, boating and prime office space.
Norwich has embarked on an ambitious plan to promote itself to
new businesses and families, and in the process has attracted
sports teams and built new recreational facilities. One such
addition is the new Olympic ice skating rink. Dodd Stadium is
home to the Connecticut Defenders, the San Francisco Giants AA
Eastern League baseball team affiliate.
Norwich is accessible by major interstate highways, railroads, ports and
airports. Air transportation is available at nearby Groton/New London Airport,
and both Bradley International and T.F. Green airports are within a one hour
drive of the city.
