    Stonington CT

Famous for its "100,000 miles of stone walls" and 25 miles of beautiful shoreline, Stonington was incorporated when the earliest settlers to the area arrived from the Plymouth colony in 1649. Originally a trading post on the Pawcatuck River, Stonington was later claimed by Massachusetts and named Southertown. Connecticut Governor John Winthrop, Jr. obtained the charter for the Colony of Connecticut in 1662 from England which set the boundaries to include the town, and the General Court first changed the name to Mystic in 1665. The name was changed to Stonington in 1666.

Stonington was known for its' whaling, sealing and shipbuilding. Two relics from the colonial era carefully preserved for future generations include the Captain Nathaniel Brown Palmer House and the Old Lighthouse Museum.

Business in Stonington primarily revolves around its' historic district and the Seaport area of Mystic. Tourism and restaurant service, along with the historic buildings and museum, are important factors in the town's economy. The village is still an active fishing and boating port that annually celebrates the "Blessing of the Fleet."

Stonington features tree lined village streets with quaint shops and excellent restaurants. Residential living in this historic community features rural estates as well as coastal summer homes.

The first government operated lighthouse in Connecticut, the Old Lighthouse Museum was built in 1823 and later moved to higher ground. This unique museum features whaling.
